Steeped in history and culture, the Bronx is one of the five famous boroughs of New York City. It is named after the Bronx River which was in turn named after Jonas Bronck, the founder of the first European settlement in the area. Jonas Bronck was of Swedish ancestry but his allegiance was to the government of Holland. His settlement was part of the Colony of New Netherland.
Being one of the most densely populated areas in New York City, the Bronx is home to people from all walks of life which is the main contributing factor to the borough’s rich cultural heritage. Nevertheless, the borough’s diversity is not without some disadvantages; according to statistical analysis, a notable percentage of the residents of the Bronx live way below the poverty level. In 2018, the population of the Bronx was estimated to be approximately 1.43 million people.
The Bronx is home to several major landmarks including the recently constructed Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and the Bronx Zoo just to mention a few.

East Bronx, NY
Before the infamous urban decay in the New York City area during the mid and late 20th century, the Bronx borough was perceived as being made up of two main regions; East and West Bronx. The Eastern half, commonly known as East Bronx, is basically the region east of the Bronx River. The area is made up of 19 well-established neighborhoods.
In contrast with the West Bronx area which has a rich history, a hilly terrain, and a high population density, the East Bronx area is more flat with a lower population density and a larger coastline. As a result of late settlement and delayed development, East Bronx was annexed to New York City 21 years after West Bronx.
Today, East Bronx boasts of having a rich cultural diversity, affordable costs of living, a well-established education system, and state-of-the-art infrastructure. East Bronx is home to almost half of the Bronx’s total population.
West Bronx, NY
West Bronx is a large mixed-use area in the Bronx that is synonymous with the western half of the borough. West Bronx lies immediately to the west of the Bronx River and is more populated than the eastern half of the borough. The high population in the region is attributed to its proximity to Upper Manhattan. There are at least two dozen neighborhoods in the West Bronx area.
During its initial stages of development, West Bronx was mainly made up of the southern and central parts of the then Town of Yonkers. The area later became the Town of Kingsbridge and was among the first communities to be annexed to the city of New York in 1874 alongside Morrisania and West Farms towns. The three summed-up modern-day West Bronx and were collectively referred to as the “Annexed District.” East Bronx was annexed in 1895, followed closely by Queens; originally western Queens County, Brooklyn; originally the City of Brooklyn, and Staten Island; Originally Richmond County.
Modern-day West Bronx is mainly composed of lower-income areas made up of traditional low-income housing complexes, tenement buildings, and multifamily homes. However, there are also several middle and high-income neighborhoods such as Riverdale.
